Jeweller Ari Athans (b.1965) established her gallery workshop in Brisbane in 2004. With gallery displays of finished work at the front of the space and the open workshop at the rear, she says, ‘All the elements come together here. I can conceptualise, create, exhibit and sell in the one place … and people like the idea of visiting an artisan’s workshop.’
The space allows Athans, with the help of part-time jewellers, to work on commissions, exhibitions and production work. She is inspired by the seductive power of the gemstones and metals she uses. Having graduated and worked in the field of geology before studying jewellery design at Enmore Design Centre, Sydney, she has a deep understanding of the physical properties of the materials.
Athans is fascinated by the way jewels are ‘loaded’ with meaning
and emotion and often draws on her own Greek heritage and significant memories
of precious pieces owned by her mother.
