Since establishing their partnership, bernabeifreeman, in 2002, Rina Bernabei (b.1968) and Kelly Freeman (b.1976) have designed almost entirely for fabrication in sheet metal. Together they have distinguished themselves as pioneers of a design approach that reconciles two seeming opposites: the brute masculinity of industrial manufacture and the soft, tactile, decorative quality of traditional textile crafts.

‘We decided straight away that we would look at technological textiles, play with manufacturing processes and explore how we could bring a craft sensibility into the industrial realm.’ Bernabei and Freeman have now succeeded in assembling a group of like-minded manufacturers who are willing to devote the necessary energy to produce their work. Bold simple forms are fabricated from sheet metal, which is powder-coated or anodised in neutral shades. The surfaces of these forms are laced with botanical or geometric patterns, which are created through a series of punched-out circular perforations – a technique that has become their signature.
