Nicola Cerini
Melbourne, VIC
Nicola Cerini (b.1969) grew up in country Victoria and studied textile design at RMIT University. After completing her degree she spent time in the early 1990s living and working in Canada, the United States and Japan. Cerini returned to Melbourne and established her studio, Nicola Cerini Australia, in 1995. The company originally produced textiles for furnishing fabrics and homewares.
Cerini’s focus shifted in 1999 to producing bags and accessories that incorporated her textile designs. Today it is rare to walk more than a block in Melbourne – and increasingly in other Australian cities – without seeing one of Cerini’s iconic bags slung over someone’s shoulder.
Dedicated to manufacturing in Australia, Cerini now produces around 15,000 bags a year. Her repeat pattern designs are inspired by everyday life and native flora and fauna. She has developed a range of clothing and is now planning to licence several textile designs for use in a wide range of commercial products.
