Lucas Chirnside & Bianca Looney
Melbourne, VIC

Lucas Chirnside (b.1976) and Bianca Looney (b.1977) operate a Melbourne-based studio that engages in research-intensive design projects ranging in scale from small hand-crafted objects to consumer products and urban design interventions. They maintain independent practices but inform and influence each other and have worked collaboratively on several projects.

Chirnside moved to Australia from New Zealand in 1990 and completed a degree in architecture from RMIT University in 2002. His foray into furniture and product design began during 2000 while in Amsterdam. He has since maintained a commitment to working in both architecture and product design.

Looney studied visual arts and landscape architecture, and is interested in blurring the methodologies of art and design. She often works with materials that reinforce the conceptual foundations of a project, for example, her topographic Z-Series tiles consciously echo the surface of earth through both their form and her choice of ceramic material.
