Julie Paterson (b.1963) studied and worked professionally in textile design in the United Kingdom before moving to Australia in 1989. She spent several years working as a freelance designer for local homeware and fashion companies, before launching the cloth brand (with Penny Simons) at the annual design fair DesignEX in 1997.

Paterson took over sole ownership of cloth in 2000 and opened a retail space in the beachside Sydney suburb of Clovelly. The business has since expanded and Paterson now balances her time between an idyllic Blue Mountains studio and her new store in Surry Hills.

cloth currently produces and sells a range of over 20 fabric designs, each in a variety of colour combinations. The fabrics are made primarily from hemp, jute and linen and are all screen-printed by hand. Paterson believes that Australia’s relatively limited history in textile design enables her to be more intuitive and experimental – something she sees as a huge freedom.
