Susan Cohn
Melbourne, VIC
Susan Cohn (b.1952) is one of the most influential designers working in Australia. She is variously described as a jeweller, a craftsperson, an artist and a designer. Having originally trained and worked in the field of graphic design, she completed a diploma in gold and silversmithing at RMIT University in 1980. She co-founded Workshop 3000 in the same year, became sole director in 1984, and runs it as her jewellery production workshop. She is one of a handful of Australian designers to have designed for Italian manufacturer Alessi, and in 2000 her work was celebrated through a 20 year survey exhibition at the National Gallery of Australia.
Ideas are central to Cohn’s practice. Much of her work involves transforming commonplace or industrial materials into valued jewellery objects, through the injection of meaning or emotion and her accomplished technical skill. She continues to make production and commission work from her Flinders Lane workshop, and is increasingly devoted to using jewellery objects to produce provocative and experimental exhibition installations.
