Janet DeBoos
Canberra, ACT

Janet DeBoos (b.1948) is an acclaimed studio ceramicist who has worked in the field for more than 30 years. Simple functional objects and the mark of the hand have always been central to her practice. In recent years she has been eager to test the possibility that there may not be any real difference between studio-produced handmade objects and factory-produced objects that ‘look’ handmade. Since 2003, DeBoos has worked with ceramics factories in Italy and China to investigate her hypothesis.

DeBoos was invited to work in a bone china factory in Zibo, Shandong Province, China. Initially pieces were produced through model makers interpreting DeBoos’ drawings, but more recently she has been hand-throwing scaled-up pieces from which moulds are made. It is the first time that tableware factories in China have worked directly from thrown work without creating models in-between.
