Akira Isogawa
Sydney, NSW
Akira Isogawa (b.1964) is arguably Australia’s most critically acclaimed fashion designer. He opened his first store in Sydney in 1993 and since 1999 has been showing collections twice a year in Paris and three times a year in Australia.
Isogawa grew up in Kyoto and moved to Sydney in 1986. His early work was a fusion of Japanese traditions with Western sensibilities – often re-using pieces of kimono fabrics. Today his textiles and influences are drawn from a much wider variety of cultural contexts. The designs are driven by the texture of fabrics and the almost infinite structural possibilities of garments.
Isogawa is committed to the process of collaboration. He has sought out skilled traditional textile producers in places such as Bali, China, Vietnam and India to develop experimental textiles. He has also established an ongoing relationship with iconic Australian company, Bonds, which has evolved into a new range of more affordable Akira garments using Bonds fabrics.
