Khai Liew
Adelaide, SA
Distinguished by a reductive purity of form, the designs of Khai Liew (b.1952) have a sculptural quality incorporating a considered interplay of light and shade, void and mass. Produced in small batches or as one-off pieces by skilled artisans, Liew’s furniture is informed by multiple historical and cultural influences.
Compelled to leave Malaysia in the wake of the anti-Chinese riots of 1969, Liew moved to Adelaide. He opened his first antique shop in 1974 and became one of Australia’s leading restorers of early Australian furniture. In the early 1990s Liew shifted his focus to mid-twentieth-century Danish furniture – drawn to its spare aesthetic and exquisitely resolved economy of construction.
Liew established Khai Liew Design in 1997 – a retail showroom and workshop where his own furniture sits elegantly alongside imported Danish pieces. Liew has established a discerning national and international clientele and, like many Australian designers, is regularly commissioned to create site-specific work.
