Maningrida Arts & Culture
Arnhem Land, NT
Maningrida Arts & Culture is one of Australia’s largest Aboriginal artists’ cooperatives. It is one of around 50 Aboriginal-owned arts centres in remote and regional Australia that promote the value of local culture. Maningrida Arts & Culture represents around 700 artists from both the township and the surrounding 34 outstations in a region covering almost 10,000 square kilometres.
The township of Maningrida was established as a trading post in 1949 and handmade mats and baskets were regularly exchanged for supplies. A permanent craft shop was set up in 1967, and this facility has evolved into the Centre as it is today. The Arts Centre is the beating heart of a substantial and complex commercial operation supporting local artists.
The fibre objects – made predominantly by women – have become highly regarded and are acquired in various art and design contexts: as works of art, as decorative objects for the interior, or simply as items for everyday use.
