Jennifer Robertson
Canberra, ACT
Jennifer Robertson (b.1962) is a textile designer specialising in woven fabrics. Having undertaken several workshop residencies and considerable historical research in various collecting institutions around the world, she is considered an international specialist in the field.
Robertson represents a bridge between hand-weavers and industry. She has a clear, long-term vision of a contemporary, cutting-edge woven textile practice. To achieve this, she and her husband Christopher designed and built a 32-shaft, semi-automated dobby loom to facilitate the multi-layered weaving techniques she specialises in. The loom enables her to have a production practice while maintaining the ‘feel’ of hand-weaving.
In 1994 she began a professional relationship with NUNO Corporation in Tokyo – one of the world’s leading textile companies. The company licensed her work and agreed to produce a range of fabrics in Australian merino wool, acknowledging Robertson as the designer – the first time the company had put the work of a non-Japanese designer into production.
