Oliver Smith
Canberra, ACT

After graduating from Sydney College of the Arts in 1995, Oliver Smith (b.1974) worked with a number of leading gold and silversmiths in Australia, New Zealand, Mexico and the United States. When Smith returned to Australia he began to synthesise what he had learnt and decided to further his studies at the Canberra School of Art.

His passion for the technique of hot forging steered him towards making flatware, or cutlery. He has recently collaborated with Hycast Metals in Sydney to develop a series of stainless-steel utensils produced in multiples through the ceramic-shell casting process.

Underlying Smith’s work is his detailed knowledge of the materials he uses and the processes of making. ‘My awareness of different methods of production, from craft-based techniques through to industrial processes, allows me a broad creative vocabulary.’ Smith’s multi-layered craft and design practice sees him making one-off handmade objects, experimental exhibition pieces, commissions, and designs for semi-mass production.
