Brian Steendyk

Brian Steendyk (b.1970) manages an independent design practice that includes architecture as well as urban, interior, landscape, furniture and product design. Designing and prototyping in Australia, he also makes frequent trips to European manufacturers and regularly exhibits in Milan and Tokyo.
Steendyk studied at Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane before moving to Chicago to complete a masters degree in architecture under the supervision of Myron Goldsmith (project architect for Mies van der Rohe’s Farnsworth House). He worked as an architect in Chicago and Amsterdam before returning to Australia and establishing his own practice in Brisbane in 2002.
His method is one of refinement and purification, of stripping back to bare and simple forms. His ideas emerge out of an objective analysis of contemporary problems, and he approaches his designs with the rigour of the perfectionist. Steendyk’s chief satisfaction stems from the ability of good design to ‘bring joy and a sense of quality to people’s lives’.
