Tiwi Design
Bathurst Island, NT

Tiwi Design Aboriginal Corporation is one of the oldest and most diverse Indigenous arts centres in Australia. It incorporates a carvers’ shelter, pottery studio, screen-printing studio, painting studio and retail gallery. Tiwi Design represents around 100 artists working in traditional and contemporary media.

Established in 1969, Tiwi Design is located in the township of Nguiu on Bathurst Island, about 80 kilometres north of Darwin. Bathurst Island and nearby
Melville Island are the traditional lands of the Tiwi people.

Tiwi Design has become particularly well known for its distinctive range of hand screen-printed textiles, including silks, linens and upholstery fabrics, regularly used by fashion and interior designers throughout Australia. These contemporary textiles are embedded in deeply valued traditions and are a living evolving expression of Tiwi culture. They possess an enduring quality and many of the original patterns from the early 1970s are still in demand and being produced today.
