Georgia Chapman
Melbourne, VIC
Georgia Chapman (b.1970) completed a degree in textile design at RMIT University in 1990 and established the fashion label Vixen in 1992 (in partnership with Meredith Rowe until 2000). Vixen is unlike other fashion labels in that the work is driven by the textile design. The distinctive printed fabrics have a beautifully feminine, hand-crafted quality, and are used to create seasonal collections of clothing and homewares that are sold in over 25 stores in Australia and overseas.
Chapman is involved in all aspects of design and production and employs a team of supportive staff including designers Maureen and Melanie Sohn who assist in developing the fashion and homewares collections. To create the printed fabrics for each season, Chapman first translates her ideas onto paper, working with photocopies, paintings, woodblocks or collages. Initially exploring imagery and scale, she works mainly in black and white, before using small printing screens to trial hundreds of colour and print combinations.
