Industrial designer Charles Wilson (b.1968) believes that it is the designer’s duty to recognise opportunities for innovation, to take a fresh look at problems and to find design solutions that contribute positively to our lives. He strives for this in his own work through employing innovative features that are sensitive to the functional and aesthetic needs of the user.
Wilson utilises computer-based modelling to draw and test his design concepts, and then creates finely crafted scale models to consider the work in three-dimensions.
He was the first of several Australian designers to have his furniture manufactured by the Sydney-based company Woodmark International. Woodmark had previously been manufacturing Danish designs under licence but is now at the forefront of supporting Australian furniture design. Wilson refers to the opportunity given to him by Woodmark as ‘Singularly the biggest break I’ve had’. Now a well established designer, he is working with several European companies on prototyping and production.
