Alana Di Giacomo and Marcel Sigel
Melbourne, VIC

Marcel Sigel (b.1976) and Alana Di Giacomo (b.1979) met as students in Perth and relocated to Melbourne to launch their design careers together. They launched their partnership, zuii, at the 2004 Milan International Furniture Fair’s Salone Satellite. The name, ‘zuii’, is sourced from the title of a Japanese manuscript, Karakuri Zuii, which details the Edo period’s ingenious mechanical puppets and clocks, and aptly reflects their eclectic and quirky approach to design.

They apply their idiosyncratic style to ordinary objects such as furniture, lighting and homewares, bestowing them with quirky, unexpected twists. Through designing, prototyping, exhibiting and publicising a range of self-initiated products, zuii have successfully established a reputation for creating work with a particular sensibility. As designers interested in selling their skills rather than their products, a reputation of this type allows them to remain in Australia while attracting design commissions from diverse manufacturers around the world.
